Do I need professional biohazard cleanup?

Can I clean it myself?
We do not recommend it. Even when contamination looks minimal, impacted materials and surfaces may pose safety and sanitation concerns. Professional cleanup helps prevent further spread and ensures proper handling and disposal.
Is biohazard cleanup covered by insurance?
In many cases, yes. Cleanup related to crime scenes, deaths, medical emergencies, and certain accidents is often covered by homeowners, renters, commercial, or auto insurance.
When applicable, we assist directly with the claims process and work with all insurance carriers.
Do I have to use the company my insurance recommends?
No. You have the right to choose your own cleanup provider. Insurance-recommended vendors may not always prioritize your best interests and often times specialize in water and fire, Great Lakes Biorecovery jobs only encompass' biohazard jobs, we are specialized and certfieid by the IICRC for trauma cleanup. We work for you, not the insurance company.
How quickly can you respond?
We are available 24/7 and often respond within 2–4 hours, depending on location and circumstances. If you are outside our immediate area, we will still work to assess and schedule service as quickly as possible. Often times, family members are out of state, we can arrange with you to still see the residence or await your arrival.
Can you assess the cleanup situation before arriving?
Yes. When appropriate, we can often assess the situation over the phone or through photos to help determine next steps, timing, and expectations.

No. We arrive in unmarked vehicles to protect privacy and maintain discretion.
Is your team trained and certified?
Yes. Great Lakes BioRecovery is an IICRC Certified Firm, which means our work follows established industry standards for trauma and biohazard cleanup. Our team includes IICRC-certified trauma cleanup technicians trained in proper handling, cleaning, and disinfection of environments affected by blood or other potentially infectious materials. This ensures we are not using general cleaning methods, but instead following structured, industry-recognized procedures designed to prevent cross-contamination and fully restore the space. In addition, our technicians follow OSHA bloodborne pathogen safety practices and use professional-grade equipment and products appropriate for biohazard remediation.

How much does death cleanup cost?
Costs vary depending on the situation, affected areas, and scope of work. We provide clear explanations of next steps and work with insurance when applicable to reduce out-of-pocket expenses.
Will I reach a call center when I call?
No. When you call Great Lakes Biorecovery, you speak directly with our team — not a call center. As a family-owned, independent company, we handle calls personally so you can get clear answers, guidance, and support right away.
What should I do before your team arrives?
If possible, avoid entering or disturbing the affected area. Do not attempt to clean or remove impacted materials. If there are immediate safety concerns, leave the area and wait for professional assistance. We will guide you through next steps when you call.
Do I need to be present during the cleanup?
Not always. Many clients choose not to be on-site during cleanup. We can coordinate access, keep you informed throughout the process, and let you know when the space is ready for use.
Can you remove odors as part of death cleanup?
Yes. Odor removal is often part of the cleanup process, especially in situations involving decomposition, waste, or prolonged contamination. We address the source of odors and apply appropriate treatment methods as part of restoring the space.

Can crime scene or biohazard cleanup be covered at no cost to me?
It may be. Both Illinois and Wisconsin have state-funded Crime Victims Compensation Programs that can cover biohazard and crime scene cleanup costs for qualifying victims of violent crime — including homicide, domestic violence, and assault. Illinois covers cleanup under a benefit of up to $45,000; Wisconsin covers up to $1,000 specifically for cleanup. These programs are more accessible than most people realize, and as a social worker–owned company, we can help you understand your options.
